There are approximately 800 bicycle-related deaths in the United States each year. Another 500,000 people are treated for bicycle-related injuries in U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year ( Consumer Product Safety Commission, 2005).

In Guilford County, 77 bicycle/motor vehicle crashes were reported in
2002 and another 54 bicycle/motor vehicle crashes were reported in 2003 (NC Department of Transportation, Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation, 2005). Less than 3% of bicyclists involved in those crashes were reported wearing bicycle helmets.

Studies show that helmets prevent 60% of head injury deaths and reduce the overall risk of head injuries by 85%.

North Carolina law requires children under 16 years of age to wear a bicycle helmet when operating a bicycle on any public road, public bicycle path or other public right-of-way.

SAFE Guilford recommends everyone wear a helmet while riding a bicycle or participating in other wheeled sports (skateboards, scooters, roller blades, etc.), regardless of age or location. Remember, crashes can occur in backyards and driveways and inflict just as much injury as public roads.

Even toddlers should wear helmets on tricycles to avoid head injuries. Enforcing helmet use with toddlers also helps to establish this habit early so as they get older, they will be more likely to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle.

Parents, children are modeling your behavior. Be a good role model and wear your helmet, too!
